The scene opens up in Mantua. There, Romeo walks the streets and he speaks of a dream he had. He dreamt that his lady found him dead and brought him back to life with a kiss. When she brought him back he revived as an emperor.

Romeo is suddenly greeted by Balthasar, Romeo’s servant. Balthasar has returned from Verona with horrible news. Juliet is dead and her body is in the Capulet tomb. Romeo can’t believe it. Romeo asks if Balthasar has any letters from the friar. He apparently wants some kind of confirmation that Juliet is dead. He then instructs Balthasar to go get writing utensils and horses. Balthasar leaves.

Romeo says that he will go lie next to Juliet tonight. Before he leaves for Verona, he’s going to visit an apothecary, a pharmacist, who makes potions and medicines. He knows that this man will be able to provide him with poison.

Before long, Romeo finds the pharmacist. Although he is hesitant, the pharmacist sells Romeo a poison that is strong enough to kill 20 men. The pharmacist only sells it to him because he is in desperate need of the good money that Romeo offers. Romeo says that only gold is stronger to men than poison. He then departs for Juliet’s tomb.
