A few people meet up: Capulet, Count Paris, a Clown, and a servant. Paris is there because he wants to convince Capulet to allow him to marry his daughter Juliet. Capulet says that his daughter isn’t even fourteen years old and she’s too new to the world to get married. Paris replies by saying that younger girls have become mothers. Capulet retorts that he will be okay with Paris marrying Juliet if Juliet agrees to it. Capulet invites Paris to a party tonight where he will see many women who he might find just as fine and interesting as Juliet.

Capulet hands the Clown an invitation list and he asks the Clown to go invite everybody listed. The Clown cannot read but he finds somebody who can. He runs into Romeo who can read. Romeo reads the list to the Clown. The Clown tells Romeo and Benvolio about the party and then he leaves.

Benvolio says that if Romeo goes to the party with him, he will show that Rosaline is nothing but a crow rather than a beautiful swan. Romeo thinks it is crazy to believe that there is a girl out there more beautiful than Rosaline. Romeo agrees to go to the party so he can admire Rosaline.
