The party at the Capulet’s house is going on. It is a masked ball. Romeo, Mercutio, Benvolio, and a few other people in masks are on their way there. Romeo asks if they should make some kind of speech to permit themselves entrance to the ball. He also asks it they should just intrude without saying anything. They are, indeed, joining a party that is hosted by their sworn enemy. Benvolio says they should just prance inside.

Romeo says that this ambling is not for him and he will simply carry the torch as they walk to light their path. Romeo is still feeling heartache since the girl that he loves doesn’t love him back. He isn’t in a very happy mood, so he literally wants to carry the light that they are using to guide their way. Mercutio tells Romeo that they have to get him dancing. He wants to brighten Romeo’s mood. Mercutio then remarks that if love is being rough with him then he needs to be rough right back; Romeo needs to take control of his situation.

Romeo remarks that they should not be going to this party on account of a dream he had. Mercutio remarks that he too had a dream. He goes into a speech about the fairy queen, Queen Mab, who visits men when they sleep. She brings whatever the men want to see in their dreams. Romeo tells him to quiet down with his nonsense. Mercutio retorts that dreams are nothing but fantasy.

Benvolio brings them back into reality and tells them to hurry up so that they don’t arrive to the party too late. On the contrary, Romeo fears that they will be getting to the party too early. In his dream he learned that he was destined to encounter something there that would lead him to an untimely death.
