The chapter begins with a visitor for Graff. General Pace, the head of the International Fleet military police, has come to see Graff following a tip from Dap. Dap let the police know that Graff is putting Ender’s well-being into jeopardy. Graff knows of a plan that some of the other boys, chiefly Bonzo, have to beat Ender to death, yet he is not planning on doing a single thing to protect Ender.
Graff explains himself to Pace. He wants Ender to become totally self-reliant so that he may grow. Pace is annoyed, but only threatens Graff with a court martial if anything bad happens to Ender.

The scene turns to Ender who is watching Bean and his new toon. Bean is using a long string, a deadline, during his training. The deadline is used to build things in outer space, but Bean discovers that it can be used to propel himself about in the Battleroom.

After practice, Ender walks with his army back to their barracks. Along the way, he notices a group of his enemies gathering nearby. Luckily, Petra comes up to Ender and keeps him company along his trek back to the barracks. Petra warns Ender of the plan that the boys have to kill him. Ender’s toon leaders, now aware of the enemy boys’ plans, are vigilant in the protection of Ender.
Things grow a little more difficult for Ender in the Battleroom when other armies begin receiving an advantage over him. During skirmishes, soldiers who the Dragons don’t completely freeze become unfrozen in a matter of minutes; however, there is no such unfreezing occurring for the Dragons. Even so, Ender’s army still beats Slattery’s Badger Army.

After the battle, while his own soldiers have lunch, Ender decides to take a shower. His shower is interrupted by Bonzo and seven others who are all out to get him. Ender taunts Bonzo by pointing out how Bonzo’s dad will react to the news of Bonzo’s attack on a young, naked boy. Ender also points out how weak Bonzo must be if he needs several other boys to support him in a fight.

Eventually, Bonzo is ready to attack. Before he approaches Ender, Bonzo has his entourage guard the door. Ender begins to force hot water on throughout the showers to get himself slimy with sweat and harder to hold. Meanwhile, Dink tries to come to help Ender but the other boys stop him from entering the room.

Bonzo starts off well enough in the fight, but after a head butt from Ender, things being going downhill for the bigger boy. Ender has a direct advantage since he is sweaty, soaped up, and hard to grasp. His advantage wins him the fight. Eventually, Bonzo falls to the floor and doesn’t move or talk.

Ender runs off with Dink. Although he is physically safe, Ender now faces his own guilt. He could have slightly injured Bonzo and then gotten away, yet he chose to stay and finish Bonzo off. Now, Ender is questioning his decision. His guilt brings him to tears.

To make matters worse, the administrators are quick to set up a new skirmish in the Battleroom. The Dragon Army will be facing two armies at the same time.

At the start of the fight, Ender has Bean scope out the Battleroom before entering it with the rest of the Dragons. Bean does so by using the twine to propel around and catch a glimpse of things. After Bean returns, Ender decides to use a unique formation. His formation and the use of Bean’s twine aids in the Dragon Army’s victory. While most of the enemy soldiers were focused on the formation, some Dragons were able to activate the enemy’s gate and have an unfrozen Dragon go through it. By doing so, the Dragons had won the game.

Later, when Anderson comes in to unfreeze the soldiers, he lets Ender know that this will be the last time that the gate can be used to achieve victory. Ender is overcome with angers since he is continuously being thrown unfair circumstances and new, unfair rules.

  ENDER'S GAME -- CHAPTER 12: BONZO
Things become even more complicated for Ender later when Bean brings him news of even more changes that are occurring at the school. Suddenly, it has been decided that many of the other army commanders are to graduate and the toon leaders from the Dragon Army are to take their spots. The leaders from Ender’s army, including Bean, are going to be in charge of their very own armies.

Ender has little time to react since Major Anderson appears with graduation papers for Ender. Like many of the other commanders, Ender is also moving on. Bean is shocked to learn that Ender is going to Command School.

Ender finds himself being quickly rushed off to Command School with Major Anderson and Colonel Graff. He learns that Anderson is now a colonel in charge of Battle School and Graff has a new job elsewhere. Joining Graff and Ender in the shuttle is General Pace.
The shuttle first goes to Earth before departing to Command School. Ender is not too fond of gravity when he gets there.

The scene turns to Major Imbu and Colonel Anderson who are discussing the fate of Graff. They know that Graff is going to meet with the Polemarch, but they don’t know if he’s in trouble or if he’s being rewarded. Regardless, they feel bad for Ender who has killed Bonzo. Ender doesn’t even know he’s a murderer.
