The chapter begins with the two unnamed men, once again, speaking about Ender. One of them describes his training methods. He will break Ender and shape him into a powerful leader. While they both agree that their methods are harsh, they seem confident that Ender will come out on top.

The scene goes to Ender who is on his way to Battle School with a bunch of other boys. On the way to their launch, all the boys other than Ender seem to be having a little too much fun. Ender knows that they are being observed and he wants to impress, so he remains serious and stern.

Ender is interviewed and videotaped for television prior to boarding for launch. He complains to the camera about being hungry and contemplates saying a few words to Valentine.

Soon enough, the shuttle is off to space. As they travel, Ender imagines Graff moving about upside down in the gravity free environment. Seeing that Ender is amused, Graff questions him and Ender tells Graff what he was picturing. Graff compliments Ender’s use of his imagination and he scolds the other boys for not using their brains like Ender did. With his commentary, Graff puts Ender on a pedestal while he insults the other boys.

Before long, a boy behind Ender begins bopping him on the head. He taunts Ender for being a teacher’s pet. Frustrated by the boy, Ender takes the boy’s hand to stop an incoming hit and he accidently throws the boy upwards. Graff comes to stop the flying boy from moving about, and he once again publicly praises Ender for his actions.

Ender, on the other hand, is frustrated at himself for hurting the boy in such a manner. He accidently broke the boy’s arm.

Finally, they reach Battle School. Once there, Ender questions Graff as to why he turned all of the boys against him. Graff makes it clear that he is there to help Ender reach his full potential at any cost. He goes onto explain how important Ender is in the fight against buggers.

After preaching to Ender, Graff forces Ender to depart.
Once he leaves, Graff is left to talk to a Battle School administrator named Anderson. They briefly speak of what they’re going to do to Ender to prepare him. They also mention how much they are depending on him to defeat the buggers.
