The chapter opens with the two unnamed men discussing Ender’s future. They know that they want him to come with them to work for the government. They don’t know, though, how they will coax him to leave Valentine and his parents. One of the men is going to try to persuade him by lying.

The scene shifts to Ender at the breakfast table. He isn’t sure how he is going to handle the bullies today at school if they come after him.

Breakfast is interrupted by a surprise guest, an officer from the International Fleet. Initially, the IF officer only speaks to Ender’s parents. Then, Ender is pulled into the conversation. They discuss Stilson’s injuries. According to the officer, Stilson is in the hospital.

The officer asks Ender about his motives for injuring Stilson in such a vicious way. Ender lets the officer know that he took down Stilson to give a fair warning to the other bullies at his school. Ender pulverized Stilson so that the other bullies would leave him alone in the future.

The officer seems so impressed with Ender’s response that he invites Ender to Battle School. The officer also introduces himself as Colonel Graff, the head of Battle School.

Graff mentions that Ender’s parents gave up Ender the moment that he was born as a third. They had to sign a contract with the government in order to have him. The contract said that they had to agree to the International Fleet’s ownership over Ender if he was selected for service.

Graff gets a moment to talk alone with Ender. He tells him that while he’s gone for years of training his siblings will grow up and change into new people. Furthermore, according to Graff, his parents will easily learn to let go of him since they had to sacrifice so much of themselves to have him.

Graff goes into secret details of Ender’s parents’ backgrounds, including their religious views. When they were young, Ender’s parents were both embarrassed of the lifestyles that their families followed. They were so ashamed that they now hide their backgrounds and have all but abandoned their religions in order to follow the current laws. They have given up much to become like everybody else, yet they went ahead and had an unconventional Third. Graff essentially tells Ender that his parents have a qualm against him since he is an unconventional Third. They worked so hard to become conventional, but then they became unconventional because of Ender.

Graff, then, begins describing Battle School to Ender. At Battle School, he will train and prepare for war in the Battleroom. There, he will learn what he has to in order to become an officer of the International Fleet.

In his final appeal to Ender, Graff describes how several decades the International Fleet almost lost to the buggers. It was only because of one ingenious officer, Mazer Rackham, that they were able to miraculously pull off a victory. Now, the International Fleet is desperate to find a new Mazer Rackham to help defend itself from a future bugger attack. They need a miracle worker and they’re hoping that Ender is it.

After a moment of thought, Ender decides to go with Graff. Ender says his goodbyes to his family and they take off.
