Desdemona, Emilia, and a clown are present. Desdemona asks the clown to get Cassio to come see her. She wants to tell Cassio that she has persuaded Othello to meet up with him. The clown leaves.

Desdemona and Emilia converse about the handkerchief. Desdemona is upset that she has lost it. Luckily, she knows that her husband is an honest man who will accept the fact that she simply misplaced it.

Othello enters. Immediately, Desdemona begins to recount the promise that Othello made to her. He promised to allow Cassio to come speak to him. On mention of Cassio, Othello asks for Desdemona’s handkerchief. He describes the magic behind the handkerchief. He demands that she get it immediately. Desdemona believes that Othello is speaking of the handkerchief to distract her from the subject of Cassio’s reinstatement. Othello grows frustrated and leaves.

Iago and Cassio enter the scene. Cassio remarks on how he’s dying to be back in Othello’s good graces. Desdemona says that she will continue advocating for Cassio when Othello’s anger calms down. According to Desdemona, for some reason Othello has been in quite the bad mood. Iago leaves to figure out what is wrong with Othello.

Desdemona assumes that it’s something going on with the government and Othello’s duties that has him so angry. Emilia warns Desdemona that it might be jealousy that is plaguing him. Desdemona hopes it’s not jealousy. She leaves to go find her husband.

Cassio is left onstage. Bianca enters. Bianca is a prostitute who really likes Cassio. He asks Bianca for a favor. He’s found a handkerchief in his room and he wants Bianca to sew a copy of it. He likes it very much and he knows somebody will come looking for it. She agrees to do so.
