The next day, Cassio, a clown, and several musicians meet up. The clown uses puns to joke around with the musicians. The puns fly over the musicians’ heads. Then, Cassio requests the clown to go ask the Desdemona’s gentlewoman to come speak to him. The gentlewoman, Emilia, is a maid who helps care for Desdemona. Emilia is also Iago’s wife. The clown exits.

Iago enters and he begins to speak to Cassio. Cassio lets Iago know that he has sent for Iago’s wife, Emilia. He will use her to get to Desdemona. Iago says that he will help with this task. Furthermore, he will distract Othello so that Cassio can freely speak to Desdemona. Cassio wants to get Desdemona’s help in getting him reinstated as an officer. Iago exits.

Emilia enters the scene and she speaks to Cassio. She lets Cassio know that Desdemona has already talked a bit about Cassio’s situation. Othello says that he likes Cassio, but Cassio injured a man of great prestige in Cyprus. It will not be so easy to reinstate him. Cassio asks for Emilia to help him get a private moment to speak to Desdemona. Emilia says she will help him. Then, they both exit.
